Marshall County's EL Program
Literacy for any child is defined as the ability to read, speak, write, and listen successfully (Araujo, 2002). However, for the EL student, not only are the above important but how to achieve literacy is important. The Marshall County School System's English Language Learner (EL) Program provides services which enable limited English proficient (LEP) students to become competent in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and comprehending the English Language. The goal of the EL program in the Marshall County School System is to emphasize mastery of English language skills and content area concepts and skills so students are able to participate effectively in the regular academic program at his/her full academic potential. It is not the intent of the EL Program to substitute or work against the student's native language(s). Rather, the EL Program shall emphasize the mastery and acquisition of English to enable LEP students to participate fully in public education and in the programs and activities of the Marshall County Schools.
